My chat with the awesome Sean Patrick Flanery… With the un-edited version below it, featuring extra questions and answers between SPF and myself.  Some pretty awesome things you’d never know.  Enjoy!

Loves Me Some SPF!

So, you have a lot on on-going projects in the works. Can you talk to me a little bit about your role in the film Scavengers?
The opportunity to play another bad guy… and I LOVE playing bad guys. I play the captain of an evil spaceship in a VERY futuristic space/action/drama.

You also play another captain in Mission Park. What drew you to this one?
It was a first time director with an interesting script that just HAPPENED to be shot in my home state of TEXAS.!!!! So, I said “let’s go to Texas!”

So, what is it that you generally look for when deciding whether to take a role or not? I look for “good”.
Either a good script, a good director, good actors, or good money. Usually any two will be fairly convincing.

I understand Lance Henriksen, who acted with you in Powder is also part of the cast in Phantom. What’s it like working again with him years later?
I actually didn’t have any scenes with him. Actually never even saw him on set. He is a dear friend of mine though, and I see him anyway.

How did you prepare for your unique role as “Powder”?
I read the script. Everything needed was inside it. Nothing more. My research (or “process”, as actors call it) started on page one, and ended at fade out.

What other things do you have in production right now?
The untitled Mickey Kelley project. A sports drama about a fighter who lost everything that was important to him.

Okay, I have to ask… Did you enjoy sticking those hooks in your pecks for Saw 3D? Tell me the truth.
No, because it was impossible to insert the hooks without actually catching flesh. …and it HURT.!!!!!!!!!

Well, it’s obvious that you know how to stay in good shape, etc. What’s your secret to consistently looking like a twenty-six year old? Well, thank you. I try to eat clean and work out everyday. I own/operate Hollywood Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and train & teach there everyday. HollywoodBJJ.com

You tend to be involved with a lot of projects that are thrillers or high-action. Are those your favorite?
Not necessarily. I love “good”, and there are things in every genre that I love. I also love character work far more than leading man type roles. The ability to create a unique character is always more intriguing than doing the “everyday man”.

While we’re on the topic of action, I have to bring up the Boondock Saints. After a decade, the MacManus brothers are back on the scene. What made you decide to re-visit these awesome characters?
The sequel was actually tied up in a lawsuit. So, as soon as the lawsuit was satisfied, we went into production immediately. The sequel was always going to get made, it was just a matter of “when”.

What do you most enjoy about being half of the infamous MacManus duo?
The fact that I was born first.

So, I have to bring it up because I used to watch this movie all the time (guilty pleasure). Simply Irresistable. I don’t really have anything to ask here. I just really liked you in this movie.
Ha. Well thank you.

Lastly, tell me five interesting, funny, or random facts/qualities about yourself.
1) I hate vegetables, so I blend them up with fruit in a smoothie everyday. 2) My dog DONUT is without question the most wonderful canine on the face of the earth and travels with me everywhere. 3) I came very close to dying three separate times while filming The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. 4) I was arrested by mistake my first week in Los Angeles and I called the manager of the T.G.I.Fridays that I worked at to explain to him that I wasn’t a bad guy, but that I wouldn’t be able to work the next three days as I was in jail (the bail was 1,395.00… which might as well have been $5 million back then). About an hour later one of the bartenders from the restaurant (whom I had only met briefly for about ten minutes a few days prior) came and bailed me out telling me: “you seem like a nice guy & man, you do NOT want to be in a North Hollywood Jail for three days”. I picked up every extra shift I could, and paid him back in a week. He is still my best friend on the planet to this day. AND, all charges were dropped once the court realized I was the wrong guy.!!! 5) While filming “I SEE YOU” in Vancouver with Sylvester Stallone, he closed down the Planet Hollywood and took us all to see the Mike Tyson fight on the big screen there. He answered all my “Rocky” questions and even called and spoke to my best friend (same guy from above) on the phone. He was incredibly cool.
